Bad Breath

Bad breath is caused by a group of anaerobic (meaning without oxygen) sulphur-producing bacteria, which breed beneath the tongue and in the throat.

"Contrary to popular belief, bad breath does not come from the digestive system, as claimed by some products. Under certain conditions, bacteria in the mouth initiate the production of the volatile sulphur compounds found in bad breath and taste disorders," said Dr Katz from California Breath Clinic.

Some of the things that trigger bad breath and halitosis, he says include a dry mouth, thick saliva, post nasal drip, a high protein diet, smoking, alcohol (including mouthwash), hormonal changes, medications which cause a dry mouth, and diabetes.

Onions, garlic and spicy food contain a variety of sulphur compounds known as mercaptans, which are very odorous. Dr Katz’s research led him to discover a compound called Oxyd-8 which knocks out bad breath bacteria for 12 to 24 hours and creates fresh breath. It is found in most of his products, including oxidising powder, rinse, toothpaste and spray.
In the United States,Dr Katz and his brother Richard, who is also a dentist, run seven clinics. They have treated more than 42,000 people, who paid around US$450 ($612) each, to get rid of bad breath and regain their confidence. Another 6 million worldwide have used his ThereBreath System formulas.
